*The reading log has really caught on yet. I think I might try a more involved approach with certain students. I was thinking about giving them a choice between 2 or 3 chapter books. I'm hoping this will help them during their silent reading times.

Second Day of Inquiry Plan
So, today was the second day of implementing my new inquiry plan. My students have been "chatty" the last couple of days but other than that they have been staying on task well and seem to enjoy the extra reading that is taking place. It seems that the students really enjoy breaking into two groups; I'm thinking because they get more individualized attention. I have also noticed already that my more hesitant readers have a new found confidence when reading in our little group. I'm excited to see more improvements!!

I like how you are evaluating along the way your idea- I think this shows good self-assessment. Exciting that your hesitant readers are feeling more confident- I hope this success continues.
ReplyDeleteIf your second graders are like ours, it will take them a few days to adjust to the change. :) We use reading logs for some of our classes that come with rewards when certain goals are met. We also use the Accelerated Reader program, and students that earn at least 5 points per week are rewarded. Some are allowed to eat in the room with the teacher on Friday. Some teachers give prizes such as bookmarks or even books. The rewards vary and they are very motivational. Good luck as you continue on. :)
ReplyDeleteOoh, I love the eat in the classroom idea. I have done this a couple of times this year and my students love it! I think I might use that as an incentive to get them to use their reading logs. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI think you will definitely find that implementing something new in the classroom results in the chattiness you're experiencing... but we all know that. :) I also find that my small group time with my students allows me to give more personal attention to each child. Some of my ELL students barely speak a word to me, except in small group time, when they really get to talking, which is good for their language goals!
